The Scholar and the Collector: Fernando Ortiz, Los Instrumentos De La Música Afrocubana, and the Howard Family Collection of Percussion Instruments

Bilingual catalogue for the 1999 exhibition, The Scholar and the Collector: Fernando Ortiz, Los Instrumentos De La Música Afrocubana, and the Howard Family Collection of Percussion Instruments, at CAFAM (Craft Contemporary). Includes an essay by Antonio Benítez-Rojo, "The Polyrhythmic Imagination."

The exhibition celebrates in great part the work of Fernando Ortiz (1881-1969), the Cuban ethnographer and anthropologist who documented the African influences on the musical traditions of Cuba, as well as the distinguished collection of percussion and folk instruments assembled by Dr. Joseph H. Howard (1912-1994), and his wife, Bootsie Howard (1921-1985).
